Numbers for London arbitrations

FOLLOWING our request last week for accurate numbers relating to New York and London arbitrations, Duncan McKenzie, Director of Economics at International Financial Services, London (IFSL) writes, "IFSL reviewed the number of arbitrations and mediations undertaken in London for its report "Delivering Results: Dispute Resolution in London", which was published under its former name of British Invisibles, in February 2000. In total we estimated over 4,500 international arbitrations and mediations undertaken in London in 1998. This report can be found on the IFSLs website at: www.ifsl.org.uk/uploads/PB_Dispute_Resolution_2000.pdf

"IFSL has subsequently updated these figures in its summary publication 'International Financial Markets in the UK'. The link to the latest edition of this report, dated November 2001, is:
http://www.ifsl.org.uk/uploads/RP_IFM_11_2001.pdf

"Latest data in a new edition to be published in the week beginning April 29 is as follows:

"Resolution of international disputes in London

"Number of claims/cases in 2001

"Ad hoc arbitrations (estimate): 500
Centre for Dispute Resolution: 467
London Court of International Arbitration: 71
International Chamber of Commerce: 61
Trade Associations (estimate): 500
London Maritime Arbitrators Association: 2622 (LMAA figure for 2000).

"This data provides some pointers as to the spread of disputes undertaken in London, but we have not attempted to estimate comparisons with other centres."
