HOLMAN Fenwick & Willan has appointed Greg Gray as its first managing partner. Roderic O'Sullivan will also take over from Robert Wilson as senior partner. The moves form part of the firm's new management structure designed to focus on the firm's key areas of development.

The firm has also announced two new partners in the shipping group. They are Dimitri Vassos in the Piraeus office and Andrew Chamberlain in the London office. Vassos specialises in dry shipping and marine insurance matters. Chamberlain specialises in salvage, collision and other casualty related work.

Mersey Maritime

MERSEY Maritime has expanded its team with the appointment of David Pendleton and Janice Stewart as business development director and financial controller respectively. Pendleton is responsible for promoting and developing the Mersey Maritime cluster. He will provide a single point of contact for all the cluster members and work extensively with local councils to ensure the future growth of the Merseyside maritime community. A chartered accountant, Stewart was previously European finance manager for Atlantic Container Line (ACL).

Institute of Maritime Law

YVONNE Baatz has taken over as director of the Institute of Maritime Law at the University of Southampton, UK. She succeeds Charles Debattista who has held the position for the last three years but will now be on study leave before returning to full-time teaching duties later this year. Baatz has been with the Institute since 1991.

Ince & Co

INCE & Co has announced the appointment of six new partners. They are Nick Burgess in Hong Kong, Perry Chan in Singapore, Jan Hungar in Hamburg, Antonis Lagadianos in Greece, and Stephen Jarvis and David McInnes in London. They are all specialists in maritime matters including casualties, insurance, trading disputes, ship finance, ship management, sale and purchase, shipbuilding, and charterparty and bill of lading disputes.

Association of Average Adjusters

DAVID Taylor has been confirmed as chairman of the Association of Average Adjusters for the coming year. Taylor, who succeeds Tim Madge, has been secretary of the association for more than 20 years and is also special advisor to the International Underwriting Association. He was also chairman of the CMI Committee, which was responsible for producing the 1994 York Antwerp Rules.

Thomas Cooper & Stibbard

THOMAS Cooper & Stibbard has boosted its shipping department with the appointment of Russell Crumplin as partner. Crumplin trained at Constant & Constant and worked at Norton Rose and Barlow Lyde & Gilbert before joining Thomas Cooper & Stibbard in January this year. He handles a wide range of shipping matters with particular experience in P&I/Defence matters and ship sale and purchase disputes. Also appointed as a partner this year was Anne Liversedge who specialises in all areas of dry shipping and the offshore energy market.

The firm has also recently extended its network of offices with a new branch in Madrid. The office will be headed up by Juan Alegre and will operate under the name of Thomas Cooper Stibbard working in association with Spanish shipping and insurance law firm Albors Galiano & Co.

Clyde & Co

BRINGING the total number to 119, Clyde & Co has appointed six new partners. They include Aida Cable, John Leonida, Philip Roose, Xavier Perinne, Andrew Grant and Graeme Taylor.

Cable, who trained as a barrister, is now a litigator specialising in shipping, international trade, banking and insurance. Leonida, who joined the firm in 1997, specialises in transactional shipping work with particular expertise in oil exploration support vessels. Based at the international cargo recovery department at the firm's Guildford office in the UK, Roose specialises in cargo recovery matters and charterparty disputes particularly for clients in the London, New York, Seoul and Antwerp marine insurance markets.

ASBA

ROBERT Spilling has been appointed president of the US branch of the Association of Ship Brokers & Agents (ASBA). Spilling has been an active director of the association since 1989 and involved in the agency business since 1975. As president he is responsible for promoting agency issues, reducing the liability burden faced by agents and establishing quality standards for agents.
