Veirano e Advogados Associados

Jonathan Barrett has joined the Rio de Janeiro office of the Brazilian law firm Veirano e Advogados Associados. Barrett was a partner for ten years with Clyde & Co in London and Sao Paulo, and also practised law with McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enerson in San Francisco. He is a Proctor Member of the Maritime Law Association.

4 Essex Court

Michael Howard QC, a senior silk from 4 Essex Court, has been appointed the new leader of the Admiralty Court, in succession to Geoffrey Brice QC, who died last November.

Commenting on his appointment, Howard said: "It will probably become necessary for the Admiralty Bar to adopt a more formal stance on who it is and what it wants to achieve".

Joseph Tan Jude Benny

Singapore law firm Joseph Tan Jude Benny has opened an office in Piraeus, under the name of Joseph Tan Jude Benny Legal Consultants. "Based on the tonnage of Greek-registered vessels passing through and calling at Singapore, Piraeus was an obvious choice for our first overseas office," said founding partner Joseph Tan.

Holman, Fenwick & Willan

Robert Wilson will succeed Archie Bishop as the new senior partner at Holman, Fenwick & Willan as from November 1, 2000. Bishop has held the position for the past twelve years.

Robert Wilson has been with Holman Fenwick & Willan for 25 years as a specialist in dry shipping litigation, and is currently serving on the management committee as finance partner.

The Swedish Club

The Swedish Club has announced four new appointments, two at the club's Gothenburg headquarters and two at its Piraeus office.

Benny Johansson has joined the Gothenburg Loss Prevention & Technical Department as staff surveyor from Broström Ship Management, where he was chief superintendent. The Gothenburg Claims & Legal Support Department has welcomed Lars Malm as a hull claims adjuster. His move to the club follows a period as a claims adjuster with Skandia.

Paul Knight and Nick Adams have been appointed claims executives at the Piraeus office. Knight joins from Richards Butler, where he was an assistant solicitor. Adams' previous position, at broker and claims consultant Arion Enterprises, involved all aspects of marine insurance and claims handling.

Ince & Co

Richard Sayer has stepped down as senior partner at shipping and insurance law firm Ince & Co after five years at the helm. "I am not retiring. I am looking forward to continuing to be one of the team responsible for Ince's shipping practice," said Sayer. Laying aside the administrative burden, Sayer will return to his role as a rainmaker for the firm and is looking forward to spending more time "out and about with clients".

Succeeding Sayer is Peter Rogan. Rogan, who joined Ince & Co in 1977, has been involved in many of the biggest insurance and protection and indemnity litigation cases in the last two decades.

Constant & Constant

Constant & Constant has recruited two new French lawyers to its Paris and Le Havre offices. Marie-Noëlle Raynard was formerly at Cesam, heading a department handling shipping claims for French insurers. Prior to that she was an in-house lawyer for fifteen years at French shipowner CGM. She joins the Paris office.

Mathieu Croix has joined the Le Havre office. Previously an avocat with Le Havre firm Cabinet Marguet, Croix deals mainly with hull and cargo claims and ship arrest.

Curtis Davis Garrard

David Gardner and Peter Measures have joined Curtis Davis Garrard. Gardner has over fifteen years' experience acting for banks and financial institutions, including working in the Middle East as in-house counsel to a large international bank. Measures has been with the firm as an assistant since 1998, during which time he has been involved in both shipbuilding and offshore disputes.
