Joseph Tan Jude Benny Anne Choo

SINGAPORE-based shipping law firm, Joseph Tan Jude Benny, has merged with corporate/IT practice Koh & Choo. The new firm, called Joseph Tan Jude Benny Anne Choo, now has a total of 35 lawyers with a corporate/IT department headed by partner Anne Choo.

Senior Malaysian shipping lawyer, Mr K Anantham, has recently joined Joseph Tan Jude Benny Anne Choo, after he was called to the Singapore Bar on July 12, 2000. With 28 years experience in practice, and a senior member of the Malaysian Bar, Anantham is well known for shipping and admiralty law and litigation.

Richards Butler

RICHARDS Butler has appointed Andrew Taylor as its new senior partner and chairman. Taylor joined Richards Butler in 1977, was admitted as a solicitor in 1980 and became a partner in 1983. He has also previously served as head of the shipping group and has been a member of the partnership board. Taylor takes over from Tim Archer who has stepped down after his third term of office.

The Swedish Club

KJELL Åsa Augustsson has been appointed underwriter at The Swedish Club head office in Gothenburg. Augustsson moves to The Swedish Club from Norwegian P&I club Skuld where he was joint head of the underwriting department at its Oslo headquarters. Previously he has also held positions at the Swedish insurance company Atlas/Sirius International and reinsurance brokers E W Payne Scandinavia AB.

Sinclair, Roche & Temperley

SINCLAIR, Roche & Temperley has appointed Richard Kimber as chief representative of its Shanghai office. Previously based at the firm's Hong Kong office, Kimber joined in 1995 as a senior solicitor specialising in maritime and trade law.

Kimber will head up the team already in place in Shanghai including Chen Zhengshengm a former admiralty judge who joined the firm in 1999, Claire Morgan, a Mandarin-speaking maritime solicitor, and Sophie An, who joined the firm in May this year and is fluent in Mandarin and Japanese. Kimber replaces Adrian Clarke who is leaving after nine years to study for an MBA at the London Business School.

HOLMAN, Fenwick & Willan has elected eight new partners bringing the total number of partners to 80. Paul Dean joined in 1991 and has since been an assistant solicitor in the admiralty department at the London office. Sybille Elleboode-Merlier joined the Paris office in 1989 and was admitted as Avocat à la Cour d'Appel de Paris in 1994.

Henry Fung joined in 1991. He is now based in Hong Kong where he specialises in commercial and marine litigation. Andrew Kinnison has been with the firm since 1991 and is also based in Hong Kong specialising in commercial/banking litigation.

Following 12 years at sea, Bill Kerr joined the firm in 1992. Having joined the admiralty department in London, he has been resident in Singapore practising all areas of admiralty law since 1998. Mr Stéphane Selegny joined in 1993. Based in the Rouen office, he deals with clients all over France advising on labour and commercial law.

Jonathan Webb joined in 1994 and has since been based in the London office where he specialises in P&I and FD&D work for shipowners. Richard Wilmot joined the London office in 1994 and now specialises in litigation arbitration for clients in the construction, energy and technology industries.

Sarantitis & Partners

VASSILIS Sarantitis, founder and senior partner of Greek law firm Sarantitis & Partners, will head up a 16-member committee for the deregulation of cabotage. The main objective of the committee will be the preparation of the new legal status for internal shipping transport in view of its total liberalisation, which is expected to take place within the next few years. The members of the committee were chosen from the immediate shipping industry, legal profession, tourism and trade sectors, and local government.

Stolt-Nielsen Transportation Group

PAUL O'Brien has been promoted to senior vice-president and general counsel of the Stolt-Nielsen Transportation Group. He will oversee and co-ordinate the legal activities of the tanker, tank container and terminal businesses. He will also be responsible for the development of joint ventures, acquisitions, capital investments and projects.
