Issue 6 of The Maritime Advocate
WELCOME to issue 6 of The Maritime Advocate, in which you will find a broad range of articles from around the world. We focus, among other things, on the maritime litigation system in mainland China and ship finance in the Far East, preview the ICMA congress in New Zealand, take a look at ship registration in the UAE, at labour law in Panama and maritime recruitment in the UK, dip into bill of lading problems in the Netherlands, focus on frustration in charter parties under US law while profiling the SMA in New York, and review the basics of the safe berth/safe port.
On our front cover , meanwhile, you will have seen Ole Lund, who takes what might be thought an unorthodox approach to the law. He says you have to "work with your fantasy". But perhaps more lawyers should catch this vision.
When we identify what it is we most love doing at work, and pursue professional dreams and ambitions, we tend to succeed and make money. Ole Lund's career could be described as doing just that. How? "We have to consider our time and how to use it," he says. "You have to choose in life. The thing you really want to do, you always have time for. Lawyers, like everyone else in business, have to prioritise their time between work, family and friends."
A balance between work and play is often hard to achieve, but an essential part of being a well-rounded, fulfilled professional. In a busy maritime law practice, it is essential to have good people among whom to spread the case load. Lawyers tend to hold on to their clients, insisting that nobody else can look after them as well as they can. But Ole Lund encourages partners to let their young lawyers get to know clients without being afraid that they will run away with them. He believes that encouraging and inspiring excellence in others is fundamental to whatever success he may enjoy, and to breeding success in others.
